Electricity rates (effective July 1, 2010 through current)
As a non-profit electric cooperative, Polk-Burnett charges only what it costs to keep the lights on for members; rates are not marked up to generate profit. The directors and employees of Polk-Burnett watch expenses carefully and are committed to providing electricity at the lowest possible cost. The co-op's last rate increases were in September 2006, October 2008 and July 2010.
What is the basic electric charge?
Your monthly basic electric charge is the power distribution cost. This covers your share of expenses to purchase, build and maintain power lines, substations and other equipment to ensure that power is available on your property. All members pay the basic electric charge for each electric account each month, regardless of energy used.
What is the kWh energy charge?
Your monthly kWh energy charge is the wholesale power generation cost. This covers the cost of electricity you actually use, including its generation and transmission from the power plant.
Summer v. Winter rates
This rate schedule includes separate rates for winter and summer, with higher rates in the summer months when demand is higher. The wholesale power costs Polk-Burnett is charged by its electricity supplier, Dairyland Power Cooperative, are calculated based upon how Polk-Burnett members use electricity. Our members use more electricity during the hottest days of summer than they do on the coldest days of the winter. As a result, Dairyland charges us more during the summer than in the winter and that is why Polk-Burnett is charging different kilowatt-hour charges for winter and summer. Winter rates will be billed November through April and summer rates will be billed May through October.
What is the co-op doing to hold down costs?
Like our members, Polk-Burnett is always searching for ways to tighten its belt. We've reduced our workforce and use of independent contractors, and we use technology to help control costs and improve efficiency.
