Polk-Burnett is guided by seven cooperative principles
Polk-Burnett is one of 40,000 cooperative businesses in America today. Together, co-ops serve 120 million people nationwide. As a cooperative business, we are guided by the following seven principles:
1. Voluntary and open membership.
Co-ops are open to all, without gender, social, racial, political or religious discrimination.
2. Democratic member control.
We are owned and governed by our members. Members have voting rights.
3. Member economic participation.
Members allocate surpluses to develop the co-op, benefit members and support activities approved by the members.
Co-ops charge what it costs and give back the rest.
4. Autonomy and independence.
Co-ops are controlled by their members. If they enter into agreements with others, they do so on terms that ensure democratic-member control.
5. Education, training and information.
Co-ops provide education and training for members and employees. They inform the public about the nature and benefits of cooperation.
6. Cooperation among cooperatives.
Cooperatives serve members most effectively by working together.
7. Concern for community.
With a focus on members, co-ops support local communities through various efforts, programs and policies.
